All the latest Adelaide Comedy news, gigs, comics, photos and more.
Adelaide has a fantastic comedy scene, and has produced some of the most well known comics in Australia. Of course, they move east as soon as they can, which is why you’ve heard of them. But when they go, they leave behind the next crop of world-class comedians.
Adelaide is regarded by comics all over the country and the world as a comedy playground, where they can come to perform in front of great, comedy-savvy audiences and really let their hair down.
WHO IS ADELAIDE COMEDY?
Adelaide Comedy is the biggest Comedy Institution in South Australia, providing live shows, comedy competitions, corporate work and something hilariously different for the people of our fair state.
Adelaide Comedy started in 2000, formed by Justin Hamilton and Lehmo (Before the Game). In 2002 Craig Egan took over as Promoter and Producer and has been running the gigs ever since. We are now in our 12th year of running stand up comedy nights, running 5 Live Comedy Shows, 5 nights a week. Every Tuesday to Friday, be sure to catch the hottest comics at Arkaba Ha Ha, The Marion Hotel and Rhino Room.
“Seriously, you guys have the most thriving comedy scene I’ve seen since Sydney in the early 90s” Mikey Robins
We have over 100 talented local comics a large number of which have gone on to extremely successful careers in comedy. Successful Adelaide exports such as Lehmo (Before The Game), Justin Hamilton (Rove, JJJ, MMM) Dave Williams (Writer for Stand up Australia), Mickey D (Best act of 2007 Adelaide Fringe), Rob Hunter (Writer for Spicks and Specks) and Hannah Gadsby (In Gordon St Tonight ABC) to name only a few, also frequently come home and visit the gigs as it is Adelaide Comedy that gave them their start while they were starting Adelaide Comedy.
“I love the Rhino Room because it’s the best comedy room in Adelaide. As for the bar … I can always remember walking in but I can never remember walking out. Too much fun.”
Tom Gleeson.
We are a huge part of the Adelaide Fringe every year with over 18 shows playing at the Rhino Room, 5 Shows playing at the Ark and Sunday Sessions at the Marion. During the Fringe we run an advertising campaign “Comedy Doesn’t Finish When The Fringe Does!” This is to let people know that we are here every week promoting local comedy and comedians whilst giving work to some of the best comics and up and coming comics around the country. Adelaide Comedians have taken out some of the Biggest Awards the Fringe can give…
Mickey D Best Comedian 2007 Adelaide Fringe
Justin Hamilton The Advertiser Award for Best Act 2008 Fringe
Michael Bowley Best Newcomer in 2009
Lori Bell Best Newcomer in 2010
Stephen Sheehan Best Comedian in 2010
Jon Brooks Best Newcomer 2011
Sam Simmons (Originally from Adelaide) Best Comedian in 2011
“The Rhino Room is not only a great venue to see comedy; it’s also THE place to go for a drink if you want to view the comedians in their natural habitat.” Arj Barker
Adelaide Comedy supports the community’s youth by holding the South Australian leg of Raw Comedy, which is a national competition for new comedians. This competition is run by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and sponsored by Triple J. Adelaide is proud to have produced four national winners since the competition started in 1998 and this year Adelaide Comedian Tom Gaynor came Runner Up in the National Competition. We also provide the SA leg of the Green Faces competition in Canberra where we take the next generation of SA comics to compete with other new comedians from around the country. Last year Adelaide Comic Moataz Hamde won the National Green Faces Prize.
“Walking through the doors of the Rhino Room always reminds me of what I like about comedy. In the dirty little green room all are equal. Reputations are left at the door. New comics swap punch-lines with people you would normally only see on the TV. But if a comedian is killing on stage, then the backstage empties and every comic is found side stage, watching, laughing, riding the energy of the gig. The outside world doesn’t exist. It’s all about the show.” Wil Anderson
Our logo features a map of South Australia on his belly because we are proud to be South Australian and intend on bringing the best local, national and international comedy to all South Australians for many years to come. We have long term plans to be here in Adelaide and it is our sincere hope that our logo and our brand of shows will live long beyond ourselves and become a South Australian institution. We believe in South Australia as an entertainment and tourist destination and as a producer of brilliant comedic acts of all styles, colours and creeds. All have a voice at the Adelaide Comedy gigs. Welcome to the last bastion of Freedom of Speech!
Adelaide Comedy, it’s comedians and venues has bared the entire of the cost of running the scene over the last 12 years.
